Apple Athenry: Resident challenges Apple Galway data center planning extension in court

Even after winning over 20 appeals, there seem to be more lawsuits against the planning permission for Apple’s data center in Athenry, Galway, Ireland. In August 2021, Apple secured five-year planning permission for the site from the Galway County Council even after ceasing plans for the project in 2019.

A local resident named Allan Daly has challenged the approval in court even after losing a previous case against the firm. Daly’s home is close to the site. In his last case, he cited ‘environmental concerns’ by claiming the planning permission was invalid because a proper environmental impact assessment was not carried out. His case was thrown out at the time.

Allan Daly is back in court, challenging the planning permission. He says the extension is invalid because the public was not consulted and because submissions of local residents were not considered. He also added that environmental policies had changed since Apple’s first application and that a reassessment is required. The case is expected to be examined in October 2021.
